The What-to-do About Finances

Share

Ask any adult and most will tell you they wish they had learned more about financial literacy when they were young. Fortunately for our Grade 12s, they were given this opportunity thanks to their Career Education teachers Ms. Lee and Ms. Leyson, who organized two financial literacy workshops with some local industry professionals.

Alphil Guilaran, co-founder of Financial Literacy Counsel with SJS Governor Bobby Ning, has visited the school for several years and leads students through a comprehensive and most importantly, practical, crash course in financial literacy.

Financial Literacy 101

Day two of the workshop with Alphil on financial literacy

The workshop was broken up into three key parts, introducing students to the various ways of earning money, what to know about money when living on your own, and how to get funding for post-secondary education. From stocks to scholarships, compound interest to income taxes, Alphil covered key topics that students will need to know for their adult lives.

One of the most important tips shared by Alphil was how to create good money habits so that students can earn, spend, share and save confidently. For example, how to make a financial plan that is a roadmap specific to you, and the importance of measuring the results of that plan to update your roadmap.

Financial literacy is an essential life skill in a rapidly changing world,” said Alphil. “We are grateful for the opportunity to teach SJS students foundational first principles and responsible money management habits as they transition into adulthood.”

Thank you to Alphil and his team member Natasya for joining us and generously sharing your expertise so that the Grade 12s can take these skills into the next chapter of their lives.

We look forward to hosting the Financial Literacy Counsel team again next week for workshops with our Grade 11s.
