Ski and Snowboarding

The SJS Ski and Snowboard team had an exhilarating season on Blackcomb Mountain, embracing the challenge of variable conditions across several racecourses, including the Race Centre, Terrain Course and the Slalom on Ross’s Gold. Our students thrived, showcasing their skills and adaptability in each event.

This season was particularly special as Grade 12 students stepped into leadership roles, guiding the team by running warm-ups and setting a strong example for their younger peers. This initiative fostered camaraderie and mentorship, leading to friendships that bridged different grade levels.

The team benefited greatly from the combined expertise of our dedicated school coaches and professional Whistler Blackcomb instructors, allowing them to hone their techniques and strategy. Their guidance was instrumental in the athletes’ progress and success throughout the season.

The season was not just about races and results; it was a journey of growth, leadership and community. The team’s collective spirit and enthusiasm made this season a memorable chapter in SJS’s sporting history.

Basketball

Last weekend (Friday, February 7 and Saturday, February 8) SJS hosted seven other schools in its annual Colin Jack Memorial Grade 8 Boys Basketball Tournament. Collingwood School defeated Lord Byng in the final, but most importantly, the tournament raised $2,000 dollars to be donated to KidSport BC and The Singh Foundation in the memory of former SJS Basketball coach, Colin Jack. Basketball playoffs have begun. The Senior Girls travelled to take on White Rock Christian on Monday in the GVISAA quarter finals. After a slow start, the Eagles found their scoring touch and were in a close game for most of the second half, but WRCA proved to be too strong at the end defeating SJS 38–32 to end the girls season.

On Wednesday, the SJS Junior Girls team travelled to Urban Academy in a first round GVISAA playoff matchup. It was a nail-biter all game, with both teams trading baskets until the very end where our Eagles prevailed 38–37. The win puts the team in the quarter finals on Thursday at Stratford Hall.

An SJS team of Grade 9 boys is playing in the Independent League playoffs for Grade 9 teams this week, taking on Notre Dame, St. George’s and possibly Vancouver College. Next week, on Tuesday, February 18, the Junior Boys host Southpointe at 4:00 PM in the GVISAA quarter finals.
