At SJS, business education extends far beyond the textbook. Through competitions, alumni mentorship and industry guest speakers, students are gaining first-hand insight into the opportunities in today’s global economy.
Stock Market Success and Alumni Mentorship
While shareholders globally may be concerned about the value of their investments, two SJS Business Club students managed to earn a profit and achieve high rankings in the recent JABC Stock Market competition.
Congratulations to Tom Chen, Grade 10, who made over $35,000 in six weeks, earning him a top 1% ranking in Canada and 4th place in BC, competing against 1,880 teams.
Special recognition also goes to Harvey Yang, Grade 10, who finished in the top 4% in Canada.
Meanwhile, our Grade 11 Business Club students are currently in training for an upcoming case competition and have benefited from the support of SJS alum Jerry Zhang ‘15, Chair of the Board for Prosper, a not-for-profit organization based at UBC Sauder School of Business.
Prosper executive members have volunteered their time with several classes. They have conveyed to our business students the transferable skills gained through case competitions and provided tips for creating effective presentations for live, judged events. Thanks to Jerry Zhang ‘15, Ryan Guerville, Sherry Li, Max Chen, Cici Qin and everyone at Prosper for their valuable insight.
Influencer Marketing in the Classroom
In another exciting opportunity, the Grade 12 Business Management class recently welcomed guest speaker Remy Zee, a Vancouver-based content creator. Remy is one of TikTok’s fastest-growing Asian comedy creators, gaining (at the time of writing) over 17 million likes and 232,000 followers. His skits have earned enough attention to lead to brand partnerships with Duolingo, Intel, A&W, the LA Lakers and Haidilao.
The IB Business curriculum includes content about the opportunities and threats of hiring social media influencers to promote a global brand, so it was fitting that Remy shared his experiences in this industry, including real examples of the legal and ethical considerations in his brand partnerships.
As a former IB student and recent UBC graduate, Remy engaged the class in a relatable way. His humour and candid presentation brought the IB Business course to life and was a great way for the Grade 12s to end their two years of study.
