Athletic Report: The Season Begins

Share

Term 1 has already been packed full of exciting sports moments as our cross-country and volleyball seasons got underway. Let’s take a look at how this fall season began for our Eagles.

Junior School

Grade 5 volleyball club is underway, with the students working hard at practice to build up their skills. They have several games scheduled before their ISEA play day on Tuesday October 27, so there will be plenty of opportunity to experience fun, competitive play before their first tournament.

The Junior School Cross-Country team, Grades 3 to 5, is a fun, active way to start the day for our younger students. They practice with the Grade 6 and 7 students, as well as a group of teachers, to run through our local neighbourhood. There will be two opportunities to cheer on our runners: October 6 at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, and the ISEA Championships on Tuesday, October 20 at Jericho Park. Good luck runners!

Senior Cross-Country

On Tuesday, September 29, our Senior School Cross-Country team, Grades 8 to 12, headed over to St. George’s School for their first meet of the year. Despite an incredibly rainy morning, the skies cleared just in time for the races.

Our top finishers include Elizabth M. in Grade 9 and Kate M. in Grade 10 for the Senior girls race. A special shout out to Will F. for his effort in the Junior Boys race. Good luck with the rest of the season Eagles!

Volleyball Season Begins

The Grade 7 girls have their upcoming Dig It Tournament on Friday, October 2. Coach Moffat says, “The girls are settling into their roles quite well for the early part of the season. They understand all the drills and are progressively getting more confident in their skills! We cannot wait to see how they continue to grow in the season. Go Eagles!”

The Grade 8 Girls Volleyball team have their first game coming up on October 6, where they will be taking on Crofton House School in the Gunn Gym. Good luck Grade 8s!

Our Girls can Dig It!

The Junior Girls Volleyball team started off their Dig It strong with back-to-back victories to win their pool on Friday, September 25. They started Saturday with a win against the Urban Academy Junior team to then make it through to the quarter finals.

It was a tightly fought match against Vancouver Christian School, who ultimately took the win. SJS played for bronze, unfortunately losing to a towering Stratford Hall team, to end their tournament in fourth. “The team showed great hustle throughout the tournament,” says Coach Bell-Irving. “There’s a lot to look forward to this season.”

The Senior Girls Volleyball team kicked off their Dig It tournament with a home opener against Urban Academy on Friday, September 25. Gunn Gym was full to the rafters with the ringing of cowbells and the roaring of their SJS peers as classes came down to cheer on their varsity team.

It was a great way to start the season, especially for our Grade 12s Alexandria, Payten and Reet, who received flowers before the game to mark the beginning of their final season. The Eagles took the win, 25–21 and 26–24, and that was only the beginning.

The Eagles blazed through the competition to reach the finals. There they faced Jules Verne, who came in with a fighting spirit and a powerful middle blocker. The Eagles ultimately came second, but smiled and congratulated their opponents with true SJS sportsmanship.

Assistant Coach Mr. Ahn said, “Normally you feel sad losing, but there was so much heart from this team I can’t be upset.”

Congratulations to the players for a strong start to the season, and thank you to the parents and SJS classmates who came to support their players throughout the weekend. Check out the gallery below from the tournaments.
