Why Discipline Deserves a Second Look: SJS Hosts Renowned Expert Dr. Tina Payne Bryson

Managing behaviour is one of the most important—and often most challenging—aspects of raising and teaching children. This October, SJS is offering a rare opportunity for parents, guardians and faculty to come together around a shared approach.

On Friday, October 24, we will welcome Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, a globally respected voice in parenting and child development, as she joins us live from California for a virtual workshop focused on how we support behaviour—both at home and in the classroom.

What makes this event particularly special is that it marks the school’s first learning session designed specifically for both families and faculty. Dr. Bryson, co-author (with Dan Siegel) of the bestselling No-Drama Discipline: The Whole-Brain Way to Calm the Chaos and Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind, will join live from California to share practical, research-based strategies that prioritize connection over correction.

At a time when advice on parenting and discipline can feel overwhelming and contradictory, Dr. Bryson brings clarity. Her approach is grounded in neuroscience and designed to help adults respond to challenging moments with calm compassion.

Aligning Home and School

“When parents and teachers take a shared approach in understanding behaviour and discipline, children benefit in every aspect of their development,” says Valerie Little, Junior School Principal. “This workshop is a chance for all of us—the adults who care deeply about our students—to learn together. We want to respond to behaviour in ways that support not just learning, but also a child’s sense of safety and belonging.”

Attendees can expect a session that is not only informative, but practical—providing tools that strengthen consistency between home and school.

“We often talk about aligning home and school,” Little adds. “This is an opportunity where we can do it—together.”

We encourage you to join us for this timely conversation about how we support the children in our care.

The opportunity to host incredible experts like Dr. Bryson is made possible through the generosity of our community through Annual Giving. Your support enables initiatives that enhance the parent experience so that we can all grow together to better support our students.
