The Power of Kindness

Share

Kindness was in the air on Wednesday, February 26 as our Counselling team hosted the annual Kindness Share Fair. Hosted on Pink Shirt Day, the energy in the atrium was bright and lively with students participating in a variety of stations to encourage and celebrate kindness. Learn more about the power of kindness as we dive into why we celebrate Pink Shirt Day and check out the gallery of photos showing off the joy of the day.

Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day began in 2007, after a group of teenagers organized a high school protest in Nova Scotia to stand up for a boy who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. This act of kindness inspired CKNW Kids’ Fund to create Pink Shirt Day as a national initiative to help other youth affected by bullying. Since then it has become internationally recognized, with people in almost 180 countries participating in raising awareness and standing up to bullying.

Kindness is my Super Power

The theme of this year’s Kindness Share Fair was “Kindness is my Super Power.” The photo booth, with a beautiful backdrop painted by Artist in Residence Dana Belcourt, was a big hit with students. Senior School and Grade 5  student volunteers helped to run a variety of activities including nail painting, temporary tattoos and backpack charm making. There was also a trivia challenge where participants were asked skill-testing questions about empathy and conflict resolution. All the activities, whether it was at the peaceful colouring station or the high-energy dance party, encouraged students to participate with an inclusive and encouraging mindset.

Thank you to the Counselling team, Ms. Bright, Ms. Tweedie and Mr. Gelmon for putting together a wonderful event, Ms. Belcourt and the student volunteers for running the stations, and to all our students for embracing kindness with enthusiasm and positivity throughout the day.
