Our students have many passions and pursuits that take them beyond the SJS classroom, and they have finished this year off with a bang. Before we head off for summer break let’s take a moment to celebrate the great things students are up to.
The Power of Community
SJS has earned a well‑deserved place on the Terry Fox School Run’s “Top 50 BC and Yukon Terry Fox Fundraisers of 2025” list. This accomplishment reflects the heart, generosity and determination of your entire school community. As a community we raised nearly $16,000. Natalie Anderson, Manager of School Runs for BC and Yukon, said this, “Together with supporters like you, we have now raised an incredible $1 billion for cancer research. Your school’s commitment is part of that legacy, and we are deeply grateful for the role you’ve played in helping reach this historic achievement.”

Dancing Queens
Grade 6 students Scarlet and Claire competed at a dance competition in Penticton over the May long weekend. Their group performances earned Platinum and Diamond awards, qualifying them for the GDS BC Dance Provincial Finals. Scarlet will be competing with her Hip Hop group and Claire with her Acro team. Congratulations to both students on their hard work and dedication.
Chemistry Competitors
Each year a handful of SJS students take the Avogadro Chemistry Contest, put on by the University of Waterloo for high school students to test their knowledge against other students in North America and internationally. Congratulations to all our participants, including Alex, Mark, Tanvir and Rosalina, and a special acknowledgement to Angel, Jolie, Brian, Andy and George who finished in the top 25 percent out of 4000 competitors. An extra congratulations goes to George for scoring 100 precent in the contest!
Volleyball Superstars
There’s been a big round of big successes for the SJS volleyball community over the last few weeks. Doris in Grade 8 and her Thunder Volleyball Club team (top photo) won the U14 Division 1 Tier 5 gold medal at the National Volleyball Tournament in Edmonton in May. Her family is very proud of her hard work, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the season and so are we!
Sloane, Grade 9, and her team qualified for nationals during their U15 Volleyball Provincial Championships. Sloane was also named a tournament All Star at Provincials in her first ever club season! While they didn’t have the finish they were hoping for at Nationals, Sloane is incredibly proud of her team. “I had such an amazing season with these girls. I wouldn’t have wanted any other team for my first season,” said Sloane of the experience. “I’m excited for the beach season to start up again, and I can’t wait for the school and club season to start in the fall.”
Elise in Grade 12 also had an outstanding performance in her U17 Provincial Championships, with her team winning gold in their division! In the National Champions her team won their pool, which created a three-way tie going into the playoffs. Unfortunately, due to a marginal point difference, Elise’s team was cut from the quarterfinals. Despite this setback they powered on and got the highest result they could, finishing 11th out of 189 teams! Congratulations Elise for all your hard work and dedication to the sport.
Math Awards 2026
Each year many Senior School students take part in several math competitions hosted by the University of Waterloo and various partners. Not only are we proud of all our students for challenging themselves, but this year was extra special because we had Grade 6 students electing to rise to the challenge and two students who even achieved 100 percent.
In Grade 6, we want to congratulate Chloe M., Frances, Johnny, Kevin, Lewis, Lucas and Tyler for challenging themselves with the Gauss 7 online math contest this year, alongside the Grade 7s and 8s.
Across several competitions, Certificates of Distinction went to the following students, meaning that they scored in the top 25 percent of all competitors in their respective contests:
Grade 6: Chloe M., Johnny and Kevin Z.
Grade 7: Ashley, Chloe Y., Leanne, Kevin X. and Yoyo.
Grade 8: Crystal, Daniel, Elise, Eva and Katherine.
Grade 9: Alicia, Aiden, Amy, Caden, Charles, Elisa, Jack, Leo, Reina and Tina.
Grade 10: Amy, Harry, Julie, Michelle, Nicole, Rayi, Spencer, Tiger, William and Vivienne.
Grade 11: Angel, Brian, George and Jolie.
Congratulations to the SJS top scorers Katherine, Reina and Jolie, as well as Kevin Z. and Tiger getting 100 percent on their tests! Additionally, Spencer, Julie and Tiger were awarded a distinction as Zone Champions with their collective scores. Well done to all the students for the hard work and effort that went into these achievements.
