Students Showcase Their Skills Near and Far

Share

We’re delighted to share a collection of recent student successes, showcasing the talent, determination and spirit of our SJS community. From the chessboard to the volleyball court, our students continue to shine both near and far. And… we also had a visit from a potential future Eagle too!

Musical Milestones

Congratulations to all of our students who participated and won prizes in the recent Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival, one of Canada’s largest and most prestigious events celebrating vocal and instrumental talents.

A special shout-out also goes to Casey Fan (Grade 4), who won 1st place in the Elite International Music Competition at Carnegie Hall, New York, on April 13. What an incredible accomplishment on a world-renowned stage!

Checking Out Chess

Casey Fan’s achievements don’t stop there. Returning from the Grand Pacific Open Chess Championship in Victoria, Casey claimed 1st place in the U1300 category after a grueling four-day competition where each game stretched nearly four hours!

In addition, Max Liao (Grade 5) and Casey—pictured—teamed up to secure 2nd place at the 2025 BC Chess Challenge.

Sporting Highlights

Our athletes continue to impress, achieving outstanding results across a variety of sports:

  • Volleyball: Over the Easter weekend at the Volleyball BC Youth Provincial Championships, Elise Bereti’s (Grade 11) Thunder U17 team earned silver in Division 1, Tier 1—the team’s highest ranking to date—while Louisa Cassidy’s (Grade 12) Thunder U18 team secured bronze in Division 1, Tier 1.
  • Field Hockey: Lucas Macdonnell (Grade 11) travelled to the Netherlands for the prestigious HDM Easter Tournament, where the Vancouver Hawks—Canada’s only representative—performed superbly against teams from the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. They were awarded as the best team for fair play and Lucas was named Best Goalkeeper.
  • Speed Skating: Jayden Li (Grade 6) continued his impressive performances on the ice, representing Vancouver at the Washington State Short Track Speed Skating Championships in the U.S. He won 1st place in every race and claimed the overall gold medal. Jayden also set personal best times and he promises to bring home more medals soon!

And finally… A Future Eagle Visits

This week, we were also delighted to have a surprise visit from six-month-old Sidney and his mom, Ms. Madison Green.
