Grade 3 Try Their Hands at the Art of Soapstone Carving
Last Friday, Grade 3 welcomed Studiostone Creative artist, Phoebe, who guided the students through the art of soapstone carving. Each child was given a soapstone block in their chosen animal shape, either a bear or wolf. To this rough shape, the children filed, sanded and buffed. Their soapstone was then coated in wax to preserve the soft material.
The Grade 3s loved this hands-on artistic experience and it was a very fun way to combine their learning of landforms and animals creatively through art. 3B welcomed parent volunteers to their session. A big thank-you to Chloe’s dad, Jeff, Preston’s mum, Ada, and to Maddox’s mum, Bonnie, who helped guide the class through their artistic session.

Grade 5 Students Blend Tradition and Wellness in Indigenous Tea Workshop with Sen̓áḵw Wyss
Also in connection with their human body and wellness unit, Grade 5 had the opportunity to meet Sen̓áḵw (Senaqwila) Wyss, an Indigenous ethnobotanist from Raven Hummingbird Tea Company. The Grade 5s participated in the company’s Tea Blending Workshop, where Ms. Wyss taught them all about traditional indigenous plant medicines and shared the ancestral teachings of using plants in teas.
The students learned about plants that support our cardiovascular system, our digestive system and our respiratory system. They learned that some teas can help us fight seasonal allergies, calm us in times of stress and soothe sore muscles. At the end, the students all got to choose their ingredients and create their own tea blends. It was a wonderful learning experience, steeped in time-honoured knowledge.
