Over the last few weeks SJS students have been seeing dividends on their hard work across athletics, arts and academics. Let’s take a look at what our students have been up to lately.
Stock Market Superstars
Once again the SJS Business Club students tackled the Junior Achievement Stock Market Competition, and for the second year in a row SJS had two teams finish in the top five in Canada out of 2,000 teams. The JA stock market simulation provides students with an opportunity to create and manage their own stock portfolio, which is linked to live data from the North American markets. Students begin the competition with 100,000 in virtual dollars and access to a $50,000 loan, if they choose to use it.
The team of Tom Chen, Andy Huang, Alex Lung, Mark Ji and Harvey Yang developed a stock portfolio value of $181,820 after only six weeks, making approximately $30,000 per week on their investments, which earned them 5th place in Canada and 3rd place in BC. Our top ranked team of Holden Fletcher, Jerry Ju and Matthew Lau developed a portfolio worth $205,604, equating to a weekly earnings of approximately $34,267 from their investments. Through their efforts, they finished 4th in Canada and 2nd in BC. Congratulations to both teams for their savvy trading and achievement in the competition.
Crushing the Chess Competition
Both the Junior and Senior Chess teams participated in the regional qualifiers for Chess and came out with great results. Casey in Grade 5 came 1st in the Junior division, while Tom and Andy, both in Grade 11, came 1st and 2nd respectively. As a whole the SJS Senior Team including Tom, Andy, Avneet (Grade 8) and Nathan (Grade 8) came 2nd overall. Congratulations to all the players!

Dancing Dynamite
Miuccia, Grade 11, recently competed at the Nuvo Dance Convention in Vancouver. She started the weekend off with a solo to kick off the competition season, before participating in a number of masterclasses led by a renowned industry professional. In these classes she learned both jazz and ballet choreography which she then performed in an intense audition against hundreds of other dancers. Miuccia’s strong ballet foundation and steady focus set her apart and she succeeded through several rounds of eliminations. In the end, she earned Runner-Up Breakout Dancer in what the director of the event described as one of the toughest years yet. This recognition now qualifies her for the 2026 Best Dancer Competition at The Dance Awards, the world’s premier dance event held in Las Vegas at the end of June. Congratulations Miuccia! We wish you the very best of luck as you prepare for the next stage of your dance journey!

Mathematical Milesetone
Earlier this year Lucas, Grade 6, participated in the Singapore Math Competition (SMC). SMC is an international mathematics challenge that emphasizes logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Each year, it attracts tens of thousands of participants from more than 20 countries, and this year Lucas earned a Bronze Award! He and his family want to thank SJS and his teachers for providing such a supportive environment that encourages students to explore, challenge themselves and grow. Congratulations Lucas for your hard work on this challenge!

Serving Up Success
Jayden, Grade 4, had an outstanding performance at his first 2025 Houston Squash Club Junior Gold tournament, finishing 3rd in the Boys U11 division against players a year older than him. Thanks to this finish Jayden is now ranked 4th in Canada and 3rd in BC in Boys U11. He will represent Canada on the international stage at the upcoming Junior Open, US Junior Open and the British Junior Open. Congratulations Jayden on your hard work and for balancing dedication and passion with your academics.

Speedskating Sensation
Jayden, Grade 7, is at it again with his stellar performance in speed skating. Last week he participated in the Speed Skating BC Cup. He did a great job keeping his focus through tough competition, earning him three personal bests throughout the competition. For podium finishes he got 2nd in the 1200 meters and 1st in the 1500 meters, earning him a silver medal overall. Congratulations Jayden! Your hard work and training is paying off.
