DP Business Students Have A-Glaze-ing Trip to Donut Company

Our IB DP Business students were invited to visit SJS parent-owned Mello earlier this week, to learn about the business of donuts.

Mello, which is owned by Janice Lee—mother of Raina (Grade 5) and Alicia (Grade 8)—specializes in delicious brioche donuts, baked fresh every day. Our DP students were made to feel welcome by Janice and the staff at Mello, as Janice provided them with a comprehensive presentation on the business, and a behind-the-scenes tour of their location on Arbutus.

The students found the tour and presentation interesting, in particular hearing how changes in land use and real estate development plans in the City of Vancouver have impacted Mello. Janie spoke to the group about her inspiration for selling donuts, the origins of the Mello branding, set-up costs and the importance of careful pricing decisions in the face of inflation.

Janice provided a written document outlining the company’s business operations, which SJS students will now use as a case study in future classes as it covers so many of the IB DP Business exam topics.

The group left with sample boxes full of donuts to share with their families. A huge thank you to Janice and the team at Mello!

Grade 3 Explore Local Ecosystems at Beaty Biodiversity Museum

Grade 3 travelled to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC yesterday for a hands-on learning experience, where they learned about biodiversity in our local ecosystem. The students have been learning about living things and how diverse our world is, and necessary for our ecosystem to survive and thrive, so the visit really brought this unit of inquiry to life.

See some photos of the trip taken by Mr. Flo, below!
