December 20 Round-Up

As we come to the end of Term 1 and enter into the holidays, here are a few recent happenings at SJS to celebrate before we head off for the Winter Break!

Senior Boys Ranked #1 in Province

Our Senior Boys Basketball team are officially ranked top in the province! This is a fantastic achievement for the team and testament to the strength of their play as well as our incredible coaching team. We cannot wait to see them in action in the New Year, especially at our annual JAM Tournament in January.

Spirit Week: Fun and Festivity

Each day this week saw lots of festive and creative costumes as both schools took on different themed dress days! See photos. There were also other initiatives this week in aid of the Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver. This included a used toy drive, ‘Santa Grams’ and there was also a house tree decorating contest. Watch this space to find out the results of that and thank you to all for their support of Spirit Week and this important cause.

Visiting Local Libraries to Further Encourage A Love Of Reading

Throughout this term Grade 6 and 7 students at SJS have been using the resources at VPL libraries! These visits, led by Ms. Sophia Hunter, were designed to encourage students to take the lead on choosing books for themselves and overall foster a love for reading. Students had the opportunity to explore a diverse collection of resources, receive guidance from experienced librarians, and spend time in the community. We love to see it!

Service as Action in Full Swing: Covenant House Vancouver

Our Senior School is happy to support Covenant House Vancouver, dedicated to helping at-risk and homeless youth. As the holidays approach, Covenant House volunteers are working tirelessly to provide essential services including hot meals, counselling and skill-building workshops. They’ll also be spreading holiday cheer through gift-giving. To help lighten the load, our Grade 6, 7, and 8 advisories took the initiative to decorate and create over 300 gift tags. By contributing to this small but meaningful task, our students are directly supporting Covenant House’s mission and ensuring that volunteers can focus on providing essential services to youth this season. Over the coming months, SJS will be participating in various service activities to make a difference.

Neo Leads Initiative to Ensure Tapestry Residents Feel Festive Cheer This Year

Neo Chan, Grade 7, proposed an idea of sending holiday cards to the residents to our neighbours at Tapestry. With the postal strike, he was concerned that the residents may not receive their cards so he thought it would be a great opportunity for SJS to spread the holiday cheer. Our Student Council was happy to support him with this initiative and Neo designed 22 cards which the Student Council helped distribute to Grade 6–12 Advisory classes this past week. Just today, approximately 200 cards were collected and delivered to Tapestry! The volunteer coordinator was absolutely delighted and appreciative of the gesture. She said they will be delivered to the residents on Christmas Eve!
