The library was full of energy on Wednesday as the Junior School was visited by local Vancouver author Tanya Lloyd Kyi for a series of interactive storytelling sessions and workshops.
A specialist in non-fiction writing for intermediate grades, Tanya has authored over thirty books for children and young adults that cover science, pop culture and even curious combinations of the two. She is also a creative writing teacher at UBC, known for her interactive presentations. Her newest book Feeling Your Feelings offers an engaging look at the science of emotions.
The Kindergarteners, Grade 2s and Grade 3s focused on storytelling connections, with an engaging reading by Tanya of her books. The Grade 4s and 5s each had an interactive workshop on how to research and present information in an interesting way, diving more into the power of non-fiction and the important balance between accuracy and creativity. All the sessions were engaging and interactive for the students, bringing life to both the the stories and the craft of storytelling itself.
It was great to see the students participating in the workshops, asking great questions, brainstorming and even acting out some pivotal moments in history that are featured in Tanya’s books. Students also had the option to have their books signed by Tanya.
