One of the most rewarding aspects of being the Head of School is having the opportunity to reflect and report on the strength and character of our community.
In Spring this year, we participated in the “School Life in Focus” independent student survey run by CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools). While we routinely engage with students for feedback, this third-party survey provided a new lens for understanding our students’ experiences, health and values. Fostering inclusivity and well-being are key priorities of the SJS Strategic Plan and it is therefore important for us to take every opportunity to measure our progress.
This survey was completed independently by students in Grades 8–12 from schools all across Canada, and the participation number of 120 SJS students—particularly for an optional survey—was excellent. I would like to give credit to Vice Principal, Daniel Ahn, for organizing, and all of the teachers that encouraged participation.
A Positive Recognition of Our Culture
I am delighted with the executive summary of findings from the survey about the culture we have at SJS. The summary was prepared independently and is provided below in full:
“Students at SJS (St. John’s School) thrive in an environment rich with inclusivity and personal growth, supported by comprehensive discussions on sexuality, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, and religion. Teachers facilitate meaningful conversations that help students reflect on these issues and their own choices. The school promotes healthy habits, effective communication, and motivation, ensuring students stay engaged and focused. This nurturing atmosphere fosters a strong appreciation for education and creates a positive, respectful environment where students feel supported and valued.”
School culture does not come about by chance and I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone for their contributions to making SJS a thriving, dynamic and caring community. Findings like this are a recognition of the dedication of our teachers, the trust and support of parents, and the commitment of our students to engage in their own learning journeys.
Looking Ahead
The Senior Leadership Team will be digging into the full results so that as a school we continue our work in meeting the academic, social and health needs of our students.
Together as a community, we continue to build on our strengths, celebrate our unique abilities and create a place where our students soar.
