Athletics October Roundup

SJS Eagles had a very active October in cross-country and volleyball across Grades 3 to 12! Throughout the many practices, games and tournaments we are proud to see our players show up with dedication, enthusiasm and great sportsmanship. Let’s take a look back at what happened in athletics this month.

Cross-Country

The Grade 3–7 Cross-Country team had a busy few weeks running at the Collingwood Pumpkin Run, West Point Grey Campus Run and most recently at the ISEA Championship at Crescent Park on October 21. All of the athletes gave it their all, showing great support for their teammates across the races. A special recognition goes out to Andrew Zhao in Grade 4 who was in the top 10 in all three of his races. He and the Grade 4 Boys team finished 2nd at the ISEA Meet.

The Grade 8–12 team also had an action-packed season. Congratulations to the Senior Boys team who came 2nd at the Vancouver Sea-to-Sky Zone championships on Wednesday, October 22. The team qualified for the BC School Sports Championship on Saturday, November 1 in Nanoose Bay.

Volleyball

The Grade 5 Girls team had a blast as hosts of the Grade 5 ISEA Playday on Monday, October 27. The day saw 14 schools, split into 44 teams, play a modified version of volleyball called Smashball. The energy from the teams filled up the first floor of SJS for the whole day!

The Grade 6 Girls Volleyball team concluded their season with the annual Play Day at Harry Jerome Centre in Burnaby on Monday, October 20. The team showed a lot of spirit with their cheers and chants both on and off the court.

On Tuesday, October 28, the Grade 7 Girls team played in the ISEA Tier II Championship at Vancouver Talmud Torah. The girls put up a tough fight in their matches, taking Stratford Hall to three sets before unfortunately losing in the final points. The girls demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the season.

At the ISAA Tournament on October 24–25 the Junior Girls A team finished 2nd after a tough battle against WPGA in the final. Both Junior Girls teams have advanced to the quarter finals in their seasons, with the Junior team A ranked in 2nd place in GVISAA West and Junior B team ranked 4th in GVISAA Central.

The Senior Girls team had a similarly strong finish in their ISAA Tournament. After falling to Meadowridge in the semi-finals, the team bounced back to defeat Brentwood for bronze in the ten team tournament. They also made the GVISAA Playoffs where they unfortunately lost in the semi-finals. Ever the fighters, our Eagles came back to defeat King David High School to take bronze for their season. Their next match is a playoff game on Monday November 3 at 3:45 PM in the Gunn Gym!

Both of the boys volleyball teams have shown great improvement throughout the season. The Senior Boys team concluded their season at the Griffin Block Party tournament at Eric Hamber, where they gave it their all against some stiff competition. The Bantam Boys Volleyball team will play a concluding round robin playoff tournament against two other teams on Tuesday, November 4.

Congratulations to all our athletes. You have worked incredibly hard and we can’t wait to see what next season brings.
