This week SJS says a bittersweet goodbye to Mr. Michael LeBlanc, Director of Operations and Information Technology, as he leaves the school after an incredible nine years to embark on a new opportunity with UBC. He will be starting at UBC Library after defending his doctoral dissertation later this month.
Mr. LeBlanc joined SJS at a time when the Junior and Senior School buildings were not yet connected. Under his technology and operations leadership we have seen extensive growth in both the physical and digital infrastructure of the school, including but not exclusively: the construction of the Arts and Science Centre, the smartboard rollout, the creation of the 1:1 device program, risk management policies and procedure updates and, most recently, the building updates for the full-day JK program.
“The thing I really appreciated about my time in SJS is just how much of a community it is, and how really the whole school thrives and is driven by these relationships,” says Mr. LeBlanc, as he reflects on his time at SJS.
Possibly the most important role that Mr. LeBlanc has had at SJS is that of a dad. With two daughters, his oldest now in Grade 11 at SJS, he has grown with the school both in a leadership role and as a parent.
“It’s been an incredible gift to have been here alongside my kids, and also helpful to get to see it through their eyes because the school cares a lot. I think everyone here cares deeply about our students and students’ experience.”
When asked what he will miss most about SJS Mr. LeBlanc said, without hesitation, it was the people. “I couldn’t ask for a more capable, more dedicated set of colleagues, with good humour too,” Mr. LeBlanc said. “I think we have an incredible staff and the people here, both faculty, staff and students, have been such a joy to work with.”
This departure doesn’t mean it’s the last time we will see Mr. LeBlanc. He will be on hand to support the transition to the new Director, as well as supporting his daughter through her final years at SJS.
A Role Model for Strong Leadership
Mr. LeBlanc worked with many different people around the school, from his IT and Operations teams, to the Risk Committee and Sustainability Committee, from community stakeholders and to each of the faculty. We sat down with a few of them to share their experience working with Mr. LeBlanc.
“Michael has been an exceptional leader and a great mentor. His calm confidence, genuine belief in others and ability to turn challenges into positive learning experiences has shaped many careers, including my own. He has a great talent for articulating solutions in a way that makes everyone feel supported and heard. I’ll always be grateful for his wisdom, kindness and the trust he’s placed in our team.” — Riaz Nagji, IT Manager
“Michael always brought a sense of steadiness to everything, and a great sense of humour. It’s been a joy working with and learning from him. I always appreciated how well he balances being compassionate and professional. He is a role model of strong leadership.” — Aliya Minnema, Vice Principal and Experiential Learning Coordinator
“During his nine years at SJS, Michael’s visionary leadership transformed our technology and strengthened our community. His collaborative spirit, innovation and people-first approach made SJS a leader in educational IT. He leaves behind both a lasting legacy and a stronger team.” — Blayne Addley, Head of School
Thank you Mr. LeBlanc for the many impactful contributions you have made to SJS over the years. We wish you all the best on your next adventure.
A search for a replacement is underway. Stay tuned for more news in the future.
