Retired But Remaining Connected: What Our Former Staff Are Up to Now

Share

As SJS headed back to school for another year of learning and fun, we took a moment to check-in with some of wonderful retired staff to hear what they have been up to recently.

This summer Stephen Hutchison, former Head of School, enjoyed hitting golf balls with Bruce Bai and Allen Pan (Class of 2020) having dinner with Oliver Tsai (also Class of 2020) in Taipei and a meal with the Pans family in Kaohsiung. He also spent time with Sharon Chen (Class of 2011) Joanna Zhang (Class of 2009) and Mr. & Mrs. Pai (Henry Pai’s parents). He said: “Our community is young but remains connected. I would love to meet with more alums!”

Trevor Gale, former Senior School Principal, retired to a Gulf Island and is settling into a completely new lifestyle. He tells us: “We have been pretty busy over the past year. Lots of construction projects and gardening. As well as music, playing pickleball, walks, beach time and fossil hunting. As well as our veggies and fruit, we have bees and four chickens (we hatched them from eggs that we got from a neighbour) and we have been busy doing some building.”

Dr. Myrnal Hawes (“Doc”) welcomed a new Border Collie/Aussie Shepherd puppy Dexter this summer, who has been keeping her busy with training, playing, walking, rescuing shoes and teaching him to make good decisions “much like with students”. Dr. Hawes has enjoyed travelling to places all around the world to help with missions, including South Africa to help run summer camps for orphans, Portugal to help in ecological endeavours and Bali to assist doctors and dentists in providing free healthcare and medications. She says: “I wish all the students and teachers a great school year; may it be an exciting and fruitful year for you all. I have so many fond memories of my 25 years at SJS, and am grateful for social media that allows me to keep in touch with students and colleagues from way back when.”

Jan Kuno returned to coach the Senior Girls Volleyball Team this year! The team secured bronze medals at both the SJS Dig It Tournament and the Vancouver Sea-to-Sky Zone Championships this year.

Eris Bonokoski welcomed her first grandchild this summer, a baby girl, and her daughter Claire got married in September.
