The beginning of June brings about the end of the Term 3 athletic season, and what a term it’s been! Take a look at all of the major milestones, new experiences and big wins for our spring teams in this athletic report.
Badminton
On Thursday, May 7, SJS hosted the LMISSAA playoffs for the Senior Boys, where our team played in the semifinals against Vancouver College. It was a tough match and unfortunately SJS did not advance to the Zone Championships. However, the Senior teams were not done yet!
Both the Senior Boys and Senior Girls team travelled to Meadowridge for the GVISAA League Playoffs on Thursday, May 21. The Senior Girls finished in third place, and the Senior Boys team were able to bring home the gold! Congratulations to both teams for a strong finish to the season.
The Bantam Girls Badminton team concluded their season with a second place finish in the GVISAA Playoffs, which were held on Tuesday, May 12 at Deer Lake School. They also took home the trophy for Most Spirited Team. Way to go Eagles!
Golf
On May 7, the co-ed Golf team participated in the ISAA tournament where they finished seventh out of 16 schools. Congratulations to our top golfer Aiden for his score of 75 (+4).
The VS2S Zone Championship took place on Wednesday, May 20, where four of our golfers took on five other schools in the A tier and finished in third place overall.
Then, on May 25, the students competed in the LMISSAA Individual Championship at Langara Golf Course. Again, congratulations to Aiden who shot a 68 (-3) to win the tournament! An impressive finish and a great run for our golf team all around.
Track and Field
The Grade 4 to 7 student athletes competed in the ISEA 2026 Championships on Monday, May 11. We had students represented in every event, from long jump to relays. We’re so proud of all our students for their hard work and sportsmanship throughout the competitions. A special congratulations to the following students who made a podium:
Grade 4: Andrew, Austin, Evelynn, Julia, Mason, Mackenzie, Ollie, Sebby, Quinton, Victoria
Grade 5: Adela, Arianna, Joanne, Elizabeth, Rivers
Grade 6: Arelie, Cara, Chloe, Maddie, Oscar, Surie
Grade 7: Edie, Farrah
The Junior and Senior Track and Field teams competed on May 6 and 7 in their league finals, with athletes needing to place in the top four of their respective events to qualify for the Zone Championships. The top finishers were: Kayden, first in Grade 8 boys high jump; Sam, first in Grade 8 boys 100 m, second in 200 m and second in high jump; Will, first in Grade 8 boys javelin and shot put; Caius, first in Junior boys triple jump; Royce, second in Junior boys javelin; and Eva, second in Senior girls shot put
At the VS2S Zones, athletes competed to advance to the BCSS Provincial Championships. Many of our students placed in the top three of their events, with Will in Grade 8 winning the javelin throw and finishing second in shot put. His brother Sam won the 100 metre sprint and came second in the 200 metres. His time was a new meet record, but he was edged out of first by 2/100ths of a second. Kayden, also Grade 8, finished second in the High Jump, while Grade 12 student Eva finished third in the Senior Girls shot put event. The combined efforts of Will, Sam, Kayden and Logan also earned them a place in the 4x100m relay.
SJS is being represented at Provincials by Will, Sam, Kayden, Logan and Eva on June 4 to 6. At the time of writing, Kayden has won bronze in the Grade 8 Boys High Jump, and Will has won gold in the Grade 8 Javelin! In an intense final, Sam was narrowly pushed out of third place by thousandths of a second in the Grade 8 Boys 100m dash.
Ultimate Frisbee
The Senior Ultimate team finished third in the LMISSAA league playoffs, earning them a spot in the Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championships on May 11. They team played well but unfortunately did not qualify for the provincials.
Junior Ultimate finished first in the LMISSAA season, which earned them a place at the BC Ultimate Invitational Tier 1 Championships on May 23 and 24. The team played hard, especially the four girls who, due to the co-ed requirements, had very few breaks. The team won their pool and advanced to the top eight for playoffs, where they finished with a new school record of eighth place. The coaches praised the team for their outstanding effort and for a great finish this season.
Grade 6/7 Ultimate team competed at the ISEA Championship Day on Thursday, May 14. They played their best game of the year in the semi finals versus Stratford Hall, coming out victorious by a score of 10–6. They finished in second place, losing the final to Southridge School.
The team concluded their season with the annual Sabrefest Tournament on Thursday, May 21. They played six games during the day, winning three of them to finish in fourth place in the tournament overall. The team put in a great effort for their last event of the season and we can’t wait to see how these students continue to grow in the sport next year.
