The month of May has been full of action for SJS athletes, with exciting performances across golf, ultimate, badminton and track and field.
Golf
On Monday, May 5 we had four SJS golfers tee off at the ISAA Tournament held at the McCleery Golf Course in Vancouver, with Avva Nguyen shooting a team low score of 78. Our team finished with a combined score of 320, good enough for sixth place out of 14 schools.
Ultimate
Both Junior and Senior Ultimate teams wrapped up their seasons.
On Friday, May 9, the Senior Ultimate Vancouver Sea-to-Sky Zone Championships were held at Inter River Park. Teams playing in this tournament were trying to advance to the BCSS provincials.
A shorthanded SJS team took on Coast Mountain Academy in its opening game, dropping the contest 6–5. They were able to bounce back and win the next game versus Elphinstone 12–7. That put them up against Vancouver Christian, with the winner getting the last berth into provincials. The back and forth game had teams tied 5–5 at halftime. VCS got two quick points and then held on for a 9–8 victory and denied our Eagles a provincials entry this season.
Also Friday, May 9, our Junior Ultimate team was in action in the LMISSAA playoffs at Trillium Fields. The LMISSAA champion qualifies for the year end BC Ultimate Junior Invitational Tournament. In the semi-final, SJS was down 7–4 to Vancouver Christian when they mounted a comeback and tied it at 8–8 when time expired. That meant the game would be decided on a final point. Unfortunately, VCS scored to win the game 9–8. SJS then played St. Patrick for third place, where the Eagles prevailed, winning the game 8–6.
The Grade 6 and 7 Ultimate teams were in action on Thursday, May 15 at the ISEA Tournaments. Both teams played outstanding, going undefeated on the day. The Grade 7 team is looking to build on that momentum when they play in the final Sabrefest tournament on Tuesday (May 27).
Badminton
Congratulations to our Bantam (Grade 8) Girls Badminton team who won two out of three matches to finish second at the GVISAA Playoff Tournament on Tuesday, May 13.
On Thursday, May 15, SJS hosted the GVISAA Junior Badminton Playoffs with our Junior Boys and Girls teams in action. After close semi-final losses, both teams bounced back to finish third. Both teams also were voted the Most Spirited teams of the tournament.
The Senior Boys and Girls Badminton teams traveled to Meadowridge on Wednesday, May 21 to play in the GVISAA Playoffs. The Girls team finished fourth, while the boys team played very well, losing a hard fought final 3–2 to finish in second place.
A big thank you to our coach Josh Liu ’14, who prepared our athletes to play at the highest level possible this season.
Track and Field
The SJS Grade 8–12 track and Field team competed at the LMISSAA league finals on Thursday and Friday, May 8 and 9. This meet was a qualifier for the VS2S Zone Championships. We had seven athletes qualify for the Zone Meet, with our two seniors Alexis Chow and Eva Huang looking to return to the Provincial Championships again this year. Athletes who finish in the top five in an event secure a spot in the BCSS Track and Field Provincials June 5–7.

SJS athletes also made a strong showing at the Grade 4–7 ISEA Track and Field Championships on Monday, May 12 with several students standing out for their impressive performances.
In Grade 7, Sam Camp-Anderson had an outstanding meet, placing first in the 100m and 200m, and 3rd in High Jump, while his brother Will Camp-Anderson also did very well placing 1st in the discus (18.29m), while also taking second in shot put (9.67m) and long jump.
In Grade 4, Elizabeth Yang won the shot put with a throw of 6.9m—beating the second-place finisher by more than a metre—while Joanne Qi earned third place in the long jump with a mark of 2.87m.
Cara Patterson, competing in Grade 5, helped her team place third in the distance medley (1 x 600m, 3 x 200m), and claimed second place in the 200m (A). Queena Wan, Grade 5, also picked up a third-place finish in the 200m (B) event.
Across the board, our students earned several strong fourth and fifth place finishes, showing depth and determination throughout the meet. Kudos to all athletes that took part!
