It’s been a bombastic start to the basketball season at SJS! Let’s take a look at everything that’s happened so far!
Leagues are Underway
The Grade 5 to 7 teams have begun their league play. For Grade 5 in particular, this is the first year they begin competitive play and the friendly game against our neighbours Fraser Academy, for both the Girls and Boys teams, was a great way to start the season.
Grade 6 Boys and Girls teams started their league with home games against Vancouver Talmud Torah on Tuesday. It was the first basketball competition for many of our SJS students and they showed great team spirit throughout the games.
A special shout out to the Grade 7 Boys and Girls teams for their success at the SLAM tournaments in November. Both teams showed great grit and determination, resulting in the Girls team winning bronze and the Boys team walking away with gold.
Bantam Boys Basketball
The Bantam Boys team started their season winning two out of three games at the Douglas College Tournament November 28–29. On December 1, they opened league play with a win over West Point Grey.
The team then got a special treat on Sunday, December 7 when they were invited to play at UBC’s War Memorial Gym against King David Secondary, where our Eagles won 48–29.

The Senior Girls team put up a good fight at their ISA tournament, despite significant injuries on the team early on It was an exciting start of what promises to be an action-packed season.
SJS’s annual Her Hoops tournament took place December 5–6 and the girls kicked off the tournament to the roar of the SJS crowd dressed all in white. The team powered through to the semi-finals where they unfortunately lost to Vancouver Christian. Saturday afternoon they came back to defeat John Knox Christian 72–64 to take bronze!
The Boys team also had a tournament last weekend in Chilliwack. Against tough competition the team lost a nail-biter of a game to Abbotsford Christian 93–90 in the semi-finals. This put them in the third place game against W.J. Mouat, where they came out on top 69–68.
All of our Eagles continue to show great sportsmanship, and we can’t wait to see what comes next! Below are some of our favourite photos from the games so far. We look forward to capturing and sharing more updates and photos with you as the season progresses.
