Urinetown: The Q&A

After months of dedication and rehearsals, the curtain is ready to rise on this year’s school musical: Urinetown: The Musical. Running from Thursday, April 10 to Sunday, April 13 at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island, our talented students are set to light up the stage with this witty, thought-provoking, and thoroughly entertaining production.

To build the buzz, we’ve put together a quick Q&A to answer some of the top questions from our school community.

Urinetown: The Musical is a rather… unusual title. What’s the show actually about?

Don’t let the title fool you! Urinetown is a brilliant satire that uses a dystopian setting to explore themes that are incredibly relevant today. It’s about a city where a corporation controls all water usage, leading to social inequality and a fight for basic human rights. Think of it as a darkly comedic reflection of issues like resource scarcity, corporate greed and the power of collective action presented in a catchy and amusing musical theatre format. In Vancouver, where we’re very aware of housing and environmental issues, these themes resonate.

Some people might be hesitant because of the title and the premise. Is it a vulgar or offensive show?

Not at all! While the title is certainly provocative, the show is incredibly clever and witty. The humour is satirical, the music is fantastic and the characters are a lot of fun. It’s a show that will make you laugh, think and leave the theatre with something to talk about. Urinetown is accessible to all ages, but recommended for Grade 6 and above.

What do you hope audiences will take away from Urinetown?

While we hope they’ll leave the theatre with a renewed sense of awareness about the importance of social justice and environmental responsibility, we really just want the audience to have a great time! The students involved in the production have put a great deal of time and effort into the production. Their passion is palpable, both on and off the stage, and they have prepared an extremely worthwhile experience for you.

It sounds great! Are tickets still available?
