Spring Awakens

Spring truly felt alive during this year’s Spring Concert. From classical favourites to modern renditions, the concert had the audience moving with the music and clapping their hands to the beat. Read on to learn about the highlights and see the gallery from the evening.

Our Students Shine

The concert was hosted by Grade 12 students Anna and Lillian, who guided the show as our fabulous MCs. After a bombastic opening of Avengers by Music 10 and Honours Band, Mr. Addley welcomed everyone to the evening’s performance.

The show was packed full of performances from all the MYP music classes, Honours Band, Senior Choir, Intermediate Choir and Strings, as well as combined performances. Teacher Candidates, Ms. Coulson and Ms. Graham, made their directorial debuts, conducting Grade 8 Music and the choirs respectively.

Music ranged from the classic Vivaldi Spring, which featured Strings soloist Darren, to the modern Skyfall performed by Music 10 and Feel it Still performed by Jazz Band. There was even a rendition of Rubber Chicken by Music 10 and Honours band that included—you guessed it—rubber chickens as instruments.

After a recognition of our Grade 12 musicians and all the work they have put into the program, the show closed with a preview from the upcoming musical production of Footloose with some of the cast performing Holding out for Hero.

An Artistic Flare

This year also featured musical scores inspired by two pieces of art from DP Art students Iona and Cecie. Each student chose one piece of art from their collection to be highlighted by the musicians.

“As someone of hybrid culture, this piece reflects my appreciation for both my Chinese and Canadian heritage,” says Iona about her chosen painting. “This scene captures a future inspired by Vancouver’s multiculturalism and decorative, artistic architecture, as well as China’s rapid technology-driven development by collaborative hands. In a world of increasingly hybrid cultures, the possibilities for my next ten years feel open and unpredictable.”

Cecie chose one of her sculptures that pays tribute to the lives of trans people who have been tragically lost. To learn more about Cecie’s piece, check out our recent article Pulling Back the Layers of DP Art.

Thank Yous

These wonderful performances would not be possible without the dedication of our staff and faculty. Thank you Ms. Deans, Ms Van Inwegen and Mr. Florencio for all your hard work, as well as teacher candidates Ms. Coulson and Ms. Graham.

Thank you to Stagecraft, led by Mr. Beaudoin, and to Mr. Nagtalon and his facilities team for putting the scene together, along with the lighting provided by Showmax. We also deeply appreciate the support of the Athletics department for the use of the Gunn Gym.

And, last but never least, a big thank you and congratulations to our student performers. A special shout out to Music 10 for putting together this year’s program design under the guidance of Ms. Murphy.
