You may see the name of this year’s musical and have many questions but fear not, here we introduce you to the story and concept behind the unique name, as auditions are set to commence later this month!
What Is Urinetown: The Musical About?
Urinetown: The Musical is a satirical comedy set in a dystopian future where a severe water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets.
The story unfolds in a city controlled by the corrupt Urine Good Company, which monopolizes the public amenities and charges exorbitant fees for their use. The protagonist, Bobby Strong, a worker in one of these facilities, leads a rebellion against the oppressive system after his father is punished for violating the toilet laws.
What Can Audiences Expect?
The musical cleverly critiques corporate greed, social inequality and bureaucratic corruption, all while blending humour with dark, dramatic elements. Through its original score, witty dialogue and self-aware humour, Urinetown offers both a sharp commentary on contemporary social issues and a parody of classic musical theatre conventions.
One of its standout features of the production is the use of breaking the fourth wall, with characters acknowledging that they are in a musical and even commenting on the nature of their own story. The show’s score, composed by Mark Hollmann with lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, blends various musical genres including upbeat Broadway numbers, jazzy tunes and soulful gospel.
The musical both parodies and pays homage to traditional Broadway shows, incorporating elements like song-and-dance numbers, over-the-top villains and earnest romance, but with a satirical twist.
