Our Senior School students have been actively exploring some of the best nature, museums and theatre productions on offer in the city to bring their classroom learning to life in dynamic and meaningful ways. Below, you can read about some of the recent field trips that have enriched their educational experience so far this term.
Grade 6 Visit the UBC Botanical Gardens to Inspire Their Creative Writing
On Wednesday the Grade 6 Language & Literature (L&L) students headed to the UBC Botanical Gardens to introduce their second unit titled “In Our Nature.” Students explored the gardens through a guided tour and captured their perspective of nature through photography.
These photos will serve as inspiration for their upcoming creative writing tasks in L&L. The group then completed the Greenheart Elevated Tree Walk to explore the upper parts of the forest and learn about what makes native trees in British Columbia unique. The Grade 6s loved photographing the variety of flora, and we look forward to seeing which photos they choose to inspire their writing!
Grade 7 Get Hands-On In Role As Young Archaeologists
Last week the Grade 7 Individuals and Societies (I&S) students went to the Museum of Anthropology for a program called “Archaeology of the Lower Fraser River.” Students participated in a hands-on observation and an inquiry-based workshop, where they took on the role of young archaeologists and learned about the distinct activities that were vital for First Nations people such as hunting, fishing, woodworking and home life. The Grade 7s engaged with real items from archaeological excavations in the area, and learned how cedar bark is made into rope before simulating that process through creation of a raffia bracelet!
DP Theatre Enjoy Their First Live Performance of the Year
Our DP Theatre students attended their first theatre trip of the year to see a performance of Baggage by Sarah Segal-Lazar at Langara College. The students were treated to a high-level and challenging performance in which they saw the principal character, Jill, battle with her ex-partners as physical manifestations of her “Baggage.”
The students dived deep into this thought-provoking play and took away some very powerful moments that they could use in their work for assessment. Students organized their thoughts around tension, emotion, atmosphere and meaning, and analyzed the impact the work had on them as an audience.
This was the first of many planned trips for the Theatre Department this year as they look forward to experiencing more live theatre.
